Granite Lake and Maggies Peaks Hike

Short, steep, and undeniably scenic, the Granite Lake and Maggies Peaks Hike is one of our favorite adventures in South Lake Tahoe. Though tiring, you will be motivated by the amazing views of Emerald Bay, Cascade Lake, and the mountainous landscape as you hike. Note that this epic route can be ventured year around; just wear microspikes or snowshoes for traction after snowfall! Always dress in layers, and in the summer months, be sure to check the forecast to mitigate getting caught in an afternoon storm at the summit.

After grabbing your free hiking permit from the Bayview Trailhead, those trekking the Granite Lake and Maggies Peaks Hike will be guided up the Bayview Trail. Steeply climbing from the trailhead, the path will demand the navigation of a few switchbacks before opening to a scenic overlook of Emerald Bay. Revel in the beauty and busyness of the bay, then continue wandering along the Bayview Trail up to Granite Lake. Dip your tired feet in the chilly waters of the alpine lake nestled amongst looming pines. When you are ready, begin your final push up to the summit of Maggies Peaks.

Eventually, you will reach the first summit of Maggies Peak, which offers incredible vistas, but we suggest climbing further south to the second peak, which boasts uninterrupted, commanding views of Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada summits. After reveling in the picture-perfect panoramas, retrace your footing along the path back to the trailhead.
