The Cal Neva Loop via Van Sickle Trail is a wonderful excursion into the alpine terrain that won’t over-exhaust you. Wander through the bustling Heavenly Mountain Resort before escaping into the wilderness and weaving between state lines. Open year-round; this versatile trek boasts a varying perspective of the High Sierra with every season. Explore the high country as you hike through mixed pines and granite gardens along this extraordinary hike.
Setting out from the parking lot in the Heavenly Mountain Resort Village, the Cal Neva Loop via Van Sickle Trail heads south beneath the gondola and onto Park Avenue before rerouting east, venturing along North Administrative Road. Once you encounter the Can Sickle Trailhead, turn right onto the route, officially beginning your official hike. In Nevada, you will climb up to an intersection with the Cal Neva Trail, turn right onto the path, and head back into California and beneath the gondola. Hook onto the Barn Trail quickly before reconnecting with the Cal Neva Trail.
Wander this route back into Nevada, heading northeast. Turn left onto the Van Sickle Trail at the next junction, tracking northwest. Soon you will reconnect with the section of the route you initially hiked before beginning the loop. From here, retrace your footing along the route all the way back to the parking lot.
