The Loughrigg Tarn & Elterwater Circular Walk is a great family-friendly adventure in the Lake District that will take you around two scenic lakes and a rushing waterfall. While out on the trail, you will pass by the scenic shores of Elterwater Lake and walk the banks of the River Brathay before experiencing the rushing waters of Skelwith Force on the way to Loughrigg Tarn. This walk is a bit busy; however, the beautiful scenery is worth having to share the trail with other walkers.

Getting there

To access the car park for the Loughrigg Tarn & Elterwater Circular Walk from Skelwith Bridge, head to the west for 1.5mi on B5343 and make a left. Continue on for another 0.2mi and you will find the car park on the left.

Loughrigg Tarn & Elterwater Walk Description

Walking the Loughrigg Tarn & Elterwater Circular is a popular activity in the Lake District due to the well-maintained paths and beautiful scenery that makes this route ideal for a great family adventure. The route sets out from the car park next to Elterwater Bridge and heads to the southeast along Great Langdale Beck before skirting around the shores of Elterwater Lake. After taking in the scenic views, follow closely along the River Brathay to pass by the rushing waters of Skelwith Force on the way to the village of Skelwith Bridge. Here, you will climb up the hillside to the north to walk along the shores of Loughrigg Tarn under the shadow of the rugged peak of Loughrigg Fell. Continue to the north along the lower slopes of the mountain and follow the trail west to eventually return to the starting point of the walk.
