The hike to Pastoruri Glacier is one of the most popular day hikes near Huaraz—and for good reason. It’s a short hike, along a well-marked path, and the pinnacle isa view of the glacier cradled by snow-capped peaks and offers one of the best views within this area. The glacier sits at 16404ft above sea level, making it essential to only attempt this hike after you’re acclimatized!

Pastoruri Glacier Trail Description
While the Pastoruri Glacier Hike is a short expedition that boasts a wonderful view, do note that it is at high altitude, which is why it is rated as a level 3 hike. It is possible to get sick from the high altitude if you haven’t acclimatized, so make sure you have acclimatized before you attempt this hike. However, once you’re used to the elevation, you can get out and enjoy this well-marked hike!
It only takes around one hour to reach the glacier from the parking lot, making this short hike one of the best bang-for-your-buck hikes in the area. Plus, the trail is quite easy to follow, so you won’t have to worry about getting lost.
After you reach the parking lot (at 15879ft), the trail starts on a wide path. It is advised to walk along the West side for views of Huarapasca and Huayacu. Keep in mind that the trail winding to the glacier was once covered in ice! Around one hour after leaving the parking lot, you will arrive at the glacier, but be sure not to dip your fingers in it as this is not allowed.
With a little luck you may spot some marine fossil and fern remains which may prove that millions of years ago the entire chain of mountains of the Andes was part of the ocean. Follow the same route back to the parking lot.
The drive will take you through a checkpoint for Huascaran National Park, where you’ll have to pay a toll, which in 2020 is S/30.

You can buy food and water where you park your car.
The path is very marked, so you can go on your own.
Wear clothes for cold and heat. Consider donning hiking boots, hiking pants, long-sleeved shirt, waterproof jacket, hat or sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
Consider taking some sweets, paracetamol, a bottle of oxygen or something to help relieve altitude sickness.

The glacier looks spectacular. Many people gather nearby the lake to take photos. It was pretty darn cold and windy. Good thing I brought a thermal jar. Enjoyed the views while sipping my premade coffee.
