Route Description for Lake Churup
This hike is one of the most rewarding, profitable day hikes out of Huaraz! However, some hikers may point out that this is a great acclimatization hike, but this path carries you from a high altitude to an even higher one, increasing the likelihood of altitude sickness, dizziness, and headaches. Do consider bringing remedies to prevent feeling woozy as you hike.
Also be aware that this hike has sections where you’ll teeter along rocks or have to climb using ropes to help you out. It’s not suitable if you have any fear of heights.
The hike from Pitec to Lake Churup embodies an array of adventure and the combination of walking with two of free climbing closer to the top work to keep any boredom at bay. Yet, the views of the rolling hills sprawling below will only improve the higher you hike. Once you reach the top, Lake Churup, cradled by mountains, will send you to a state of awe.
After you arrive in Pitec, you will walk along a wide path sandwiched between ichus (Andean grass). Eventually, you’ll reach the rocky section, where the adventure begins. With the help of the cables, you’ll make your way along the path, which runs close to the river, until the scenery unfolds into Lake Churup. To the left, you’ll get the chance to admire the valley formed by the Cordilleras Blanca and Negra (White and black mountain ranges), as well as the city of Huaraz. Follow the same route back to Pitec.
