While out on the trail, you will pass by the 12th Century Byland Abbey and climb uphill to eventually reach the Mount Snever Observatory that was constructed in 1838. This is a great route for anyone wanting to explore the hills or those who are interested in local history.

Whether you are fascinated by the history of Yorkshire or are simply looking to gain a different perspective of this beautifully scenic region, the Byland Abbey and mount Snever Observatory Walk offers a great way to get out onto the trails and explore the countryside.
Setting out from the trailhead in the small village of Byland Abbey, you will head to the northeast and pass by the ruins of the 12th Century Byland Abbey that was disestablished in 1538 by King Henry VIII, before turning to the northwest to climb up the forested hillside.
Eventually, you will arrive at the edge of an escarpment, where you will find the Mount Snever Observatory. This stone tower was constructed in 1838 and has changed ownership several times, eventually falling into a state of disrepair. From this location, you will have some amazing views overlooking the undulating terrain of the Howardian Hills. After taking in the sights, you can simply retrace your steps on the return back to the trailhead.
