While the trails on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon tend to be more rugged than those on the south side, the Uncle Jim Trail is a perfect way to experience the wild scenery on this side of the canyon without needing to exhaust yourself. This route is 4.7mi long and has a much gentler elevation profile than anything else on the North Rim. You won’t miss out on those jaw-dropping views, though. Expect moderate traffic.

Uncle Jim Trail Description

Uncle Jim Trail is the best option on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon for hikers who want to take in the view of this more rugged and untouched side without needing to complete thousands of feet of elevation gain. This trail is rated as easy but the views are still spectacular, with Bright Angel Canyon starring in the scene from the viewpoint along with Brahman Temple and Deva Temple.

You won’t need to make too many considerations for this route because of its relative ease, but you should be prepared for the sometimes unpredictable weather of the North Rim, which is almost 7000ft higher than the South Rim. It can be very hot in the summer and impassable due to snow in the winter.

From the North Rim Trailhead, Uncle Jim Trail heads away from the road, curving north. Stay right at the fork to cross the Roaring Springs Canyon. Across the creek, the trail splits. We like to hike clockwise, hugging the edge of the rim to the overlook and then turning back to finish the loop. From there, retrace your steps to the trailhead.
