Union Peak Trail

Difficulty Rating:
Union Peak Trail leads through Crater Lake National Park to the top of Union Peak. The route is quite relaxed until the final climb to the top, which is said to be one of the steepest in southern Oregon (according to the signage at the trailhead). Don’t worry, there are lots of good handholds. This route is not a good pick for kids, and although dogs are allowed on leash, they would likely be unable to reach the top with you.

Union Peak Trail Description
Union Peak is a short, rocky peak with great views of Crater Lake National Park at its peak. This hike is mostly easy until the final climb, which is very steep and rocky. Thankfully, good handholds make it fairly accessible for those who are comfortable with hands-on climbing. It’s a beautiful hike, especially on a clear day!
This route is not the best choice for children or dogs unless you turn back before the climb. The route up to that point is quite easy, but little ones and dogs will likely be unable to make it all the way to the top.
From the trailhead, follow the PCT roughly south. You’ll hike through shady trees for the first half of the hike (you’ll want bug spray). Look for cairns marking the way. The second half is less shady, so sunscreen could be needed.
The final climb is steep and rocky, but the rock is grippy. Take in the peak view before turning back and retracing your steps.
