If you are after a relaxing one-way stroll by the water’s edge, then the Stroud and Stonehouse Canal Walk is the perfect way to spend an afternoon on the trails. This charming route will take you along the restored Stroudwater Navigation Canal, exposing you to views of historic buildings and lovely recreation areas in the process. While there is one set of stairs to navigate, this trail is otherwise free of difficult terrain, making it perfectly suitable for walkers of every skill level.
Getting there
To get to the trailhead for the Stroud and Stonehouse Canal Walk from Nailsworth, head north on Bridge Street/A46 for 2.4mi and take the first exit at the roundabout onto Cainscross Road, following it for 225ft. Reaching another roundabout, take the second exit onto A46 and continue onto a third roundabout, taking the second exit onto Rowcroft. After 223ft. Take the third exit onto Cheapside, where you will find the car park.

The Stroud and Stonehouse Canal Walk is a lovely adventure in The Cotswolds AONB, that will take you between these two towns along scenic waterways. As this is a one-way trail, you will need to either take the train back to the starting point of the walk or arrange a pick up at the end of the route. Luckily, the start and end points are both located next to rail stations. Setting out from Stroud, you will head to the west and cross over the canal, following along its edge as you meander past beautiful recreation areas, old industrial buildings, and historic mills. Take some time to appreciate the peaceful waterside setting, as you work your way between the two towns and eventually arrive at the terminus of the trail next to the Stonehouse rail station. From here, you can walk back along the trail to relive the scenic views or travel back via your desired method of transportation.
