Wendover Woods Walk Description

The Wendover Woods Walk in the Chilterns is a popular, family-friendly half-day hike near Wendover. The number of people flocking to this area makes it necessary to leave early to get a parking spot, which requires a payment. You can also take the train to Wendover station and walk to the start of the hike. While this walk is ranked as easy-moderate, it does take you through some exposed areas with loose stones, as well as one ascent that will have you huffing and puffing. Lastly, you will navigate 1 kissing gate, making this walk inaccessible for wheelchairs.

Once you get on the trail, you will fall in love with the eerie beech woods, the blanket of wildflowers and bluebells, and the undulating countryside. You’ll also encounter Boddington hillfort, a prehistoric archaeological site. For the most part, despite the one ascent, this walk follows an easy grade, making it fun for the whole family!

From the train station, you’ll take a left, passing the Shoulder of Mutton pub. Continue walking along High Street. When you reach the last shop, look for a sign that says “Ridgeway” next to a footpath. Take this footpath. Continue to follow the signs for “Ridgeway” to stay on the right path (marked by an acorn symbol). You’ll go by a lake, a church, and along the road. When you reach crossroads, head straight, up Hogtrough Lane. Keep an eye out for signs pointing you along The Ridgeway.

After you pass Boswell’s Farm, the woodland will envelop you. The trail takes you on an ascent for 1 mile. Soon, you’ll cross over Hale Road, reaching Wendover Woods. Take a left to leave The Ridgeway, going downhill. 0.0mi later, go on the footpath on your right before meeting up with a horse track. Take a right on the horse track and continue walking until you get to the main parking lot. If you parked here, your walk begins now!

Continue along the tarmac road on your left before taking a left, following a wide path for 0.5 miles and passing by picnic tables and barbeques. This takes you to another parking area! Go along the Boddington Bank Walk. When you see fitness equipment, don’t turn left and continue going straight. The path will dip into a descent before merging with another track. Take a right to keep going downhill. Eventually, you will meet up with a road at the bottom. Take a right to head back to Wendover. Soon, you’ll reach a junction. Go right and look for a path snaking between houses on your left. Follow this path back to the park. If you took the train, head back from the park the same way you came to the train station.
