Tring Park and Hastoe Walk Description
The Tring Park and Hastoe Walk in the Chilterns is a lovely walk that winds through woodland and parkland, but do know that you will have to traverse country lanes, so look out for the occasional vehicle driving by. Speaking of cars, when you park at Forge Car Park, you’ll have to pay a fee. It costs £2.40 to park for 4-10 hours. This undulating loop will take you through kissing gates and up steps, making it more challenging for some people to access. There are also cattle grazing in the park, so keep your pup close when crossing this area of the walk. However, the Tring Park and Hastoe Walk is a fantastic, year-round option, thanks to pavement sections! It can get muddy, though, so check the weather before you go.
Expect to revel in the sweet smell of fresh air in Tring Park and Stubbings Wood, where wildflowers dot the land. The semi-natural-beech woodland will have you feeling like you’re living in a charming fairytale! To top it off, Tring Park harks back to 1066, making it fun to spend a moment thinking about all the other people who have walked this land before you. The Tring Park and Hastoe Walk starts and ends at Akeman pub, so you can celebrate your journey with a refreshing pint!
From the car park’s main entrance, take a right onto High Street before taking the second left to follow Akeman Street. At the intersection at the top, take a left and then an immediate right into Hastoe Lane. After you go under the flyover, you’ll take a right for a concrete path, which has a sign for Stubbings Wood. The path will soon start to run near the main road! After 656ft, go left, heading uphill. Be sure to glance back for stunning views of Tring below! Continue ascending before teetering along the wooded area. This path will take you to the top of the hill. You’ll go in and out of the woods, continuing straight. When you enter the woods again, take a quick left to follow the trail up the hill until you reach a fork. Take a left here. After a few more steps, take another left at the next fork to exit the woods. When you get to the top of the hill, you’ll reach a lane.
Take a right, heading uphill to a road junction. Upon arrival, take a left to go along Church Lane and The Ridgeway National Trail. Cross to the other side of the road, so you can take a left to follow a grass verge up Marlin Hill. When you get to the top, take a right to turn into Tring Park. In winter, you can expect stunning views overlooking the Vale of Aylesbury. When you see a path veering right, ignore it. Instead, head towards the Summer House.
Continue along the main path, which will start to veer left towards the obelisk. Keep going until you get to a kissing gate of which you’ll pass through. Walk across the park towards the footbridge that stretches over the A41. Cross it to reach a fenced path. Head straight towards the town and High Street and back towards Akeman Pub for a pint.
Do note that you can walk clockwise or counterclockwise—this route takes you in a counterclockwise direction!
