Old Baldy Lookout Trail Description
Hiking the Old Baldy Lookout Trail will take you along the edge of a rocky escarpment for some pretty amazing views. Although the area may be scenic, the terrain does feature a few steep drop offs that could prove fatal if mistreated. Make sure to wear proper hiking footwear and exercise caution as you work through these areas. Additionally, if you plan on attempting this hike in the winter, microspikes and hiking poles are highly recommended for the best traction along the trail.
Even though the route features a relatively small amount of elevation gain and some rocky/rough terrain, it is a fairly laidback adventure that is well suited for a fun family excursion in Grey County. Views along the escarpment lookouts will produce an amazing sightline across the picturesque Beaver Valley, and the terrain along the route is varied enough to make for an interesting hike through the charming woodland landscape. If you are looking for amazingly scenic views without the commitment of a longer or more challenging route, then the Old Baldy Lookout Trail is the perfect day-hike option for you.
Setting out from the parking area, make your way to the southwest along the trail and follow it into the shady cover of the forest. After 1296ft of hiking , you will arrive at a fork in the trail. Take the path on the right, following it for the next 755ft to arrive at the edge of the escarpment for some amazing views overlooking the lush expanse of Beaver Valley.
Continue south along the trail for the next 1083ft, taking some time to stop at each of the lookouts along the way to appreciate the scenic views across the picturesque landscape. Be careful through this section, as the rocky terrain of the escarpment features some steep drop offs that could be dangerous.
Arriving at another junction with a trail on your left, keep straight and continue through the peaceful woodland setting for another 0.8mi to cross over a small creek and arrive at the southern terminus of the trail at the edge of a clearing. From here, turn back and retrace your footsteps along the trail to return to the previous junction.
Take the path on the right here to climb gently uphill through the forest away from the escarpment for an alternate route back to the trailhead. As you meander through this last stretch of woodland terrain, take the time to reconnect with nature as you descend the hillside to eventually arrive back at the parking area having completed the Old Baldy Lookout Trail.
