Cusco, PeruAndrea NuñezCusco, Peru
Andrea has been designing tours with Amazonas Explorer since 2015. She moved to Cusco to take advantage of the fantastic hiking and be immersed in nature. Helping clients explore Peru is her dream job, and seeing new travellers fall in love with the country inspires her to create the best itineraries possible. While she’s an avid hiker and adventurer herself, she also loves sharing the culture and cuisine of Peru through her tours.
Q & A- Q: What is your favourite trip that you offer?
- A: The Sacred Valley of the Incas Hiking Adventure is a once in a lifetime experience I encourage all of my clients to have. The combination of day hikes really showcases the best of Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and of course Machu Picchu. Every day you hike to beautiful places, see incredible ruins, and meet lovely locals. You also get to stay in a beautiful private villa with your own private guide, driver, and even chef!
- Q: What is an unforgettable local experience you’ve had?
- A: Part of my job is to test services and visit our suppliers to later be able to sell it to the right clients. One of the tours that I tried recently and I really enjoyed was visiting a local community and working the land with them. It made me really appreciate the food that I have on my table every day. The sacrifices the locals make when working their farms. Without them, we wouldn’t have anything healthy to eat.
- Q: What is one experience anyone visiting Peru should have?
- A: For me, travelling is not only visiting archaeological sites. It is meeting the local people, learning about their customers, and expanding our knowledge of how people live in another part of the world. This will give us another perspective on the world and life.
- Q: What do your guests say they like best about the trips you create?
- A: They say that they felt that the entire trip was exactly what they were looking for and exceeded their expectations. I always go the extra mile to make sure my clients get the right trip and make the most of their precious holiday. I look forward to working with you all to create these unforgettable memories.

Uganda, Rwanda, BurundiDicksonUganda, Rwanda, Burundi
Dickson graduated with a Travel and Tourism Management degree from Makerere University four years ago and has spent the time since touring people around Uganda. The knowledgeable, experienced guide is passionate about sharing his love for his country through tours, no matter which region since all offer something unique and spectacular to that particular area.
Q & A- Q: What are guests most surprised about in visiting your country?
- A: When most clients come to Africa and Uganda at large, some have a perception of a continent infested with sickness, poverty, civil wars, among others. I have received testimonies of life-changing experiences after clients have travelled with us. This is because of the welcoming nature of Ugandans, the unique culture of the people, and the green covering the land throughout the country, and the food here tastes different.
- Q: What is the most challenging adventure you've ever done?
- A: My very first time of hiking Mt Muhavura was so hectic—I actually thought I would not make it to the top. I eventually did, but one of our colleagues twisted her ankle, and we had to carry her down the mountain for over four hours which made it worse. However, I did it again a year later, and it was fun.
- Q: What is one local dish or drink that tourists must try on a visit to your country and why?
- A: Steamed banana, which is locally known as Matooke. It's one of the local favourites!

- Q: What has been your most unforgettable experience while guiding?
- A: Once, I arrived in La Paz with a group of guests and I was planning to take them to a viewpoint. I asked them to close their eyes and only open them when we arrived there. When they saw the view over the city, it was sunset time, the colors in the sky and reflected on the mountains were so incredible that they started crying. I felt so touched to see travellers crying in front of the beauty of my city.
- Q: What is one local dish or drink that tourists have to try while visiting Bolivia?
- A: Without any doubt the salteña. It is a local snack similar to the empanada. It’s juicy and filled with meat and eggs and we eat it in the middle of the morning. It really identifies us, it is impossible to come to La Paz and not try the salteña.

Amazonas Explorer aided JC in going to university and earning his official cultural guide certification, and he completed training in swift water rescue and first aid. This allowed him to guide a much wider range of trips, and he’s never happier than he is when showing his beloved country to new people.
Q & A- Q: What is your favourite trip to lead?
- A: The Biking Adventure in the Sacred Valley is just the best mountain bike trip we offer and I get to ride all the very best trails in Peru. What could be better than that?
- Q: What is one experience anybody visiting your country should have?
- A: I have to say Machu Picchu, no? It is amazing but so is my hometown of Cusco and the Sacred Valley, which you can’t miss. If I can suggest one thing, it would be to take your time. Don’t rush, and do “get off the bus” and enjoy the silence, the scenery, and the great outdoor adventures we offer and not just rush from one “must-see” to another.
- Q: Where would you like to go on a holiday?
- A: Why go on holiday when I already live in the best place already?! But I hear the mountain bike trails in Canada are amazing and I’ve met so many British friends over the years, I’d like one day to go and do a tour of the UK and say hi to them all!
- Q: What is the most challenging adventure you’ve ever done?
- A: In 1999, my bosses and I mountain biked from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado, 550 kilometres of brutal dirt road from the mountains to the Amazon jungle. It took us 9 gruelling days. One river crossing was so high, I nearly floated away! I’m actually not very tall, which is why my other nickname is “Chato” (or Shortie”).

South Africa, Namibia, BotswanaMachiel BreedtSouth Africa, Namibia, Botswana
Machiel Breedt has spent the last five years guiding tourists in South Africa. He enjoys introducing participants to his country’s vast, diverse scenery, from the animals of Kruger National Park in the North to St Lucia and the beautiful coastline, to the Drakensberg mountains and the Wine of the Cape.
Q & A- Q: What is your favourite trip to do and why?
- A: Probably touring from Cape Town to Vic Falls via Namibia and Botswana. It is pure Africa. The vibe of Cape Town and surrounds, to the vastness of the Namibian deserts and plains, to the breath-taking nature and wildlife of Botswana, to the amazing Victoria Falls.
- Q: What is your most unforgettable moment when guiding?
- A: I have 2 moments that I will never forget. The first one is a couple of years ago I had a group doing a 16-day tour from Johannesburg to Cape Town and on that tour was two sisters who got separated at a very young age and didn’t see each other again for about 50 years. One day they walked past each other in a supermarket and recognised one another. One of the local radio stations heard about the story and sponsored them a vacation to enjoy together, and I had the honour of having them on my tour and showing them our beautiful country.
- The second is the time that we were on safari in the Okavango Delta in Botswana, and we saw a pack of about 20 lions devouring the carcass of an elephant.
- Q: What is one local dish or drink that tourists must try on a visit to your country and why?
- A: It would most definitely be biltong and Amarula. Biltong is meat that is dried with a variety of spices, and it’s just too delicious for words. Amarula is a cream liqueur that is made from the fruits of the Marula tree and just goes down so nice after a long and hot African summer day.

- Q: What is one local dish or drink that tourists have to try while visiting Italy?
- A: The small ravioli pinched by hand one by one called plin. It’s very thin pasta with a lot of work put in to make them.

- A: The great food and wine, nothing like the rest of Italy.

Santiago de Compostela, SpainMargotSantiago de Compostela, Spain
Margot is a new guide with Galiwonders, and loves sharing her pride in her home region of Galicia with visitors. She enjoys sharing the history, stories, legends, and unknown information with tourists to connect them deeply with the region they’re in.
Q & A- Q: What is your favourite trip to lead and why?
- A: Any trip around Galicia. Fortunately, I have had the chance to travel far and wide, I’ve visited many counties, many cities, all beautiful and with something special, but I guess the saying "the heart is where home is" is applicable to me.
- Q: What are guests most surprised about in visiting your country?
- A: Tourists usually have a preconceived idea of what Spain is like, and when they are here they are surprised to see that how they thought it was had no similarity to that notion. I find this is especially true with Galicia. The most common ide they have is that it’s all Flamenco, bulls and polka dot dresses. That is just in Andalucia, and in Madrid, for tourists. Each region has its own unique traditions and folk culture.
- Q: What is one experience anybody visiting your country should do?
- A: El Camino de Santiago. It does not matter what religion you belong to. It is the sentiment, the relaxation, the feeling of wholeness one senses while on the Way. It’s the goal of accomplishing a pilgrimage for whatever the reason one may have, reaching the end of the road where all roads meet. Along the way you make friends with people from all over the world, the group gets larger and larger, some speak Spanish, others French, others English, even Chinese. It’s a wonderful multiracial group, and once you all reach Plaza do Obradoiro in Santiago de Compostela, you all embrace. Everyone’s jumping and laughing with sore, bruised feet and sweaty clothes for having accomplished the challenge, feeling so good and wondering why the rest of the world does not embrace this experience.

Maria has worked in the Athens office of S-Cape for nearly 4 years. She’s discovered an even deeper love for her country through the process of helping others explore it.
Q & A- Q: What is your favourite trip to lead and why?
- A: My favourite trip is Crete “Coast to Coast” because you discover unspoiled Crete while following walking paths through wildflowers, lush valleys, and gorgeous gorges. You get to know the locals, drink wine with them, and taste the famous Cretan food in local taverns. You meet the locals of this village in the “kafeneion” and drink a “Raki” with them. You get to stay in a beautiful old restored house and enjoy views of the White Mountains whilst having breakfast. Explore the White Mountains and walk at an altitude of 1,300m gazing at the white peaks surrounding you. On the south coast, you walk through beautiful gorges. It’s just wonderful!
- Q: What are guests most surprised about in visiting your country?
- A: You hear how good the food, the sun, and the people are. It’s even better in real life!
- Q: What is one local dish anyone visiting should try?
- A: Greek salad, tzatziki, stuffed tomatoes, fried zucchini, and traditional souvlaki, of course!

Q&A
Q: What is the best part of guiding tourists in your country?
A: I like the fact that I don’t have to be between four walls in an office and Ecuador has so much to offer like volcanos, the rainforest, beautiful beaches, the Galapagos Islands, and I am in love with these amazing places within my country and I am very happy to show them to the tourists.
Q: What is your favourite trip to do and why?
A: I love to be a Tour Leader in the Galapagos Islands because is so amazing and unique how the species evolve to live in a harsh environment, the geology in the islands is just spectacular and we can snorkel, scuba dive, biking, hiking or just walk around the little towns and in each activity you get to see something interesting.

A: That even though we are at the equator we have 4 natural regions; our elevation goes from sea level to 6263 meters Chimborazo Volcano (20668 feet) which is the highest point around the world measure from the core of the earth, travellers cannot believe how many native nationalities we have, the flora and fauna; more than 16000 species of vascular plants, 1608 species of birds including more than 130 species of hummingbirds all of them inside our small piece of land.

Q: What is your most unforgettable moment when guiding?
A: Biking and snorkelling with sea lions in Isabela Island in the Galapagos.
Q: What is one local dish or drink that tourists must try on a visit to your country and why?
A: In Quito we have one drink we love during the festivities of the city in December we call it Canelazo made out of Naranjilla (Solanum quitoensi) cinnamon, cloves and sweet pepper cooked together, we serve it hot and pour some moonshine that is sugar cane liquor. We love to drink this during cold nights.

Q: What is the most challenging adventure you’ve ever done?
A: Downhill ride at Frogs trail close to Quito City in a front suspension bicycle.
Q: What do your guests say is best about the trips you lead?

Paul has been guiding professionally for 4 years, but unofficially guiding friends and family for 20 years. He loves making friends out of strangers and seeing the excitement in their faces as they kayak, cycle, walk, and explore. He never gets tired of the abundant mountain and sea views.
Q & A- Q: What is your favourite tour to lead?
- A: Whichever one I’m doing that day! In all seriousness though, go west. My favourite trip is Island Hopping on Ireland’s West Coast, since you really have the chance to see Ireland at its most amazing - 4 incredible islands as well as Connemara and Burren national parks. It’s nearly too good to be true.
- Q: What are guests most amazed about when visiting Ireland?
- A: No doubt everyone is amazed by the scenery- the empty white beaches, lush green mountains, the abundance of castles and the ancient graves older than the pyramids of Giza. The Burren has 27 kinds of orchids alone, and that’s just the start of the incredible flora and fauna!
- Q: What has been your most unforgettable moment while guiding?
- A: Helping someone who swore they couldn’t get to the top of Croagh Patrick Mountain and seeing their pride at the top! I also love when you’re at ancient structures like Poulenabrone and you’re explaining the history and myths of the place while you’re actually standing right there. It’s as amazing for me as for them!

Rajiv has been working as a guide since 1996, and fell in love with sharing the ancient cultural and social roots of India with travellers. Rajiv believes that the diversity of India’s different regions in terms of food, language, and culture makes travelling the country an experience like no other. Rajiv runs all kinds of tours, but especially enjoys trekking tours. He’s climbed mountains up to 8,000 feet in -10 degrees with groups and considers those to be his greatest achievements as a guide.
Q & A- Q: What is your favourite trip to lead?
- A: I enjoy giving people walking tours of the city, because that’s the best way to give a vivid introduction to the country and also because there is an element of surprise on the streets. It cannot be controlled or planned, and I immensely enjoy presenting that world to them.
- Q: What is one experience anybody visiting your country should have?
- A: Learning to cook traditional Indian food.
- Q: What is one local dish or drink that visitors absolutely have to try?
- A: Masala Dosa, it’s very tasty.
- Q: What is the best part about guiding?
- A: Providing them with more than they expected and noticing and taking care of any discomforts the guests might experience. Sometimes the guests don’t say it, so as a guide you have to be very attentive to that.
