This well maintained woodland trail is a great family walk in the Chilterns! Look out for the white belly, golden ‘collar’, and quick movements of the Firecrest: at about the size of a 10p coin it is the UK’s smallest bird.

Route Description for The Firecrest Loop – Wendover

This trail is marked by square, purple ‘Firecrest Trail’ signs hanging on wooden posts with directional arrows. The trail starts behind the café, across the road, and to the left of the small car park.

Start on this wide downhill track, named the ‘Family Cycle Trail’, until you reach the first marker after 600m. Take a sharp right here on a smaller trail that takes you even further downhill.

After 1312ft follow the arrow to the left (or to the right if you want to follow the shortcut signs), along a much narrower path with exposed tree roots. The trail meanders to the left, then to the right as it gradually climbs back uphill to meet the ‘Family Cycle Trail’ again. At this junction turn right, continuing downhill.

In about 164ft, before the trail becomes paved, you will see another sign directing you right and back into the woods. After a short while take a clearly signed trail to the left. This is where the trail starts to climb back uphill.

Follow the trail through the woods, across the main track, and further uphill to your right. The forest edge is on your left, and as you come out of the woods at the top of the climb you will find a bench with splendid views of Wendover Valley below.

Continue to follow the purple markers back across the main track and into the woods until you reach the bird hide on your right. The hide is a great place to stop and spot a variety of wildlife, not just the brilliant Firecrest.

After stopping at the bird hide, continue back on the trail to your right as it runs parallel with the main drive. You will walk through a small field with benches, and back into the woods until you reach the trail end. The Go Ape facility will be on your left. Follow the driveway on your right and you will soon be back in the main car park.

Insider Hints

  • Don’t miss out on Haddington Hill, the highest point in the Chilterns. The ½ mile hilltop trail starts by the café. To find the trailhead, follow the path between the toilet blocks to the left. Then, turn right and continue through the small car park. There is a monument 328ft in on your left and stunning views as you continue on.

  • Café in the Woods is open year round and makes a great place to stop before or after the trail!

Took me longer to finish the hike, found a nice spot to rest, and fall asleep. Love the gentle breeze. It was calming.

Family Cycle Trail was nice. It's pretty simple and uncomplicated. Most of my favorite views were present in that trail.
