Sun Notch Trail Description
Sun Notch Trail is a quick and rewarding hike in Crater Lake National Park that takes you to the Phantom Ship Overlook. You’ll enjoy a great view of the lake and of the Phantom Ship with very little effort required. This hike is good for all skill levels and makes for a nice stop as you drive through the park. Expect a bit more traffic on this hike than many other routes experience.
From the trailhead off E Rim Drive, you’ll follow Sun Notch Phantom Ship Viewpoint Trail as it heads to the base of the loop. You can go either way, but our route goes counterclockwise. Stay right and continue to Sun Notch. Stop for a photo, then walk a bit further to the Phantom Ship Overlook. It’s a great viewpoint! Keep an eye out for birds here, including golden eagles.
From here, the route continues down to the base of the loop and then back to the parking lot via the same trail.
