Specimen Creek Trail Description
The Specimen Creek Trail is a fantastic route tucked in the northeastern corner of Yellowstone National Park. This trail is long; if you plan to hike the whole thing in one day, be sure to start early in the morning and bring along a headlamp in case you wind up finishing in the dark. Pack lots of snacks and water for this adventure, and bring a canister of bear spray. The Specimen Creek Trail travels through prime habitat for large mammals, including bears, so it’s important to be prepared. With over 15.0mi of trail to explore and incredible views throughout, the Specimen Creek Trail is a great way to experience the beauty of Yellowstone National Park.
Beginning at the Specimen Creek Trailhead, follow the path northeast to Specimen Creek Junction. At the Junction, take the path on your left and follow the North Fork of Specimen Creek to another junction. At this divide, take the path on your left once again to make your way to the trail’s end at Shelf Lake.
Enjoy a well-deserved rest at Shelf Lake before turning around and retracing your steps back to the Specimen Creek Trailhead where you began.
