The Black Butte Trail to Big Horn Peak is an adventurous trail in Yellowstone National Park. This hike is challenging with a steep and consistent climb to the top of Big Horn Peak. Proper hiking footwear and plenty of water are essential items for this route. We strongly recommend bringing a set of hiking poles to aid your ascent and save your knees some strain on the way back down. With incredible 360 degree panoramic views of the surrounding wilderness, the Black Butte Trail is a worthy challenge with a rich reward.
Beginning at the Black Butte Trailhead, follow the path northwest to a divide. Stay right at the divide to make your way to the top of Big Horn Peak.
Enjoy the summit views from the top of Big Horn Peak. Then, when you are ready to head down, simply follow the same path back to the trailhead where you began.
