Ellis Peak Trail Description

With ample alpine terrain to explore, the Ellis Peak Hike offers breathtaking scenery every step of the way. Wander through lush pine forests into alpine meadowlands and along the shoreline of Ellis Peak before reaching the summit. Note this route can be ventured year-round, but it is important to check for road closures as Barker Pass Road is subject to seasonal closure! When hiking in the winter, be sure to strap on a pair of microspikes or snowshoes to safely navigate the terrain! Pack plenty of water and dress in layers when tackling this trek!

Embark on your adventure from the trailhead off Barker Pass Road. From here, follow the Ellis Peak Trail, steeply climbing up a set of switchbacks to a small mountain summit. Enjoy the views of the encompassing mountainous landscape as you wander southeast along the saddle. At the intersection, turn left onto the Ellis Lake Trail to the charming lake. With limited tree shade, you will be overwhelmed by the incredible views from the shore. When you are ready, head back out to the Ellis Peak Trail and continue east up to the summit of the Sierra Nevada.

Revel in the beauty of the dramatic landscape, including the sights of Lake Tahoe! Admire the grandeur of the wilderness, and when you are ready, head back along the trail the way you came, back to the trailhead.
