Wolfsklamm Trail Description

From the church, walk towards the nearest mountains. There are also signs saying “Wolfsklamm” and pointing you in the right direction. You’ll walk for five minutes, following the road to Wolfsklamm, at which point you will reach a little hut where you have to pay an entrance fee (about 5€). After that, follow the forest road along the river uphill. Soon the road transitions into a narrow trail.

This trail follows the river at all times; there are no junctions. The scenery along the river gets more and more dramatic with every step, and you will even have the chance to see some spectacular waterfalls along your hike.

After 45 minutes the trail continues onto a flat forest road. You’ll soon get your first glimpses of the St. Georgen monastery. Continue straight on the forest road and at the first junction, take a right. You’ll trace up some switchbacks, cross a wooden bridge, and in about fifteen minutes you will reach the monastery. There is a restaurant here where you can have lunch.

You can either hike back the route you came in on – if you want to enjoy the waterfalls again – or hike a new route through the forest. The trail in the forest does not offer any highlights, but there are almost no other people on that trail!

To hike the trail in the forest, go left at the junction, about five minutes after the bridge, and follow the signs that say “Maria Tax”. After about 35 minutes you’ll reach Maria Tax – a little chapel in the forest.

Continue along the trail, going back to the village of Stans. As you descend, you can already see the church in Stans, where you started your hike.

Insider Hints

  • Go either early in the morning or late in the afternoon as there are many people on this trail. You will stand in a queue on this narrow trail in the early afternoon.

  • If you start along the trail in the forest (clockwise loop) you can avoid paying the entrance fee.

  • In some sections the trail in the canyon is quite slippery because of the many waterfalls around.
