Grizzly Lake Hike Description
The Grizzly Lake Hike is a great adventure up to the shimmering lake. The well-marked, easy-to-follow trail is a welcomed change from technical and primitive hikes in the area. Adventure through golden aspen groves, dense pine forests as you travel through the Grizzly Gulch, which serves as a corridor between looming snow-capped peaks. Shared with off-roading vehicles, it is important to consider that some drivers may not be accustomed to seeing intrepid adventurers, such as yourself.
Begin your journey along the Grizzly Lake Trail from the Grizzly Gulch Trailhead. If you are hiking, there is a parking lot just northeast of the trailhead. From here, walk along the Hancock Road southwest to the trailhead. Departing from the trailhead, follow the Forest Road 296/Grizzly Gulch Trail south. The path will begin to gradually climb, guiding you beneath the timberline. Note the terrain is rocky so mind your footing. As you hike, you will be rewarded with sights of the golden aspens interspersed with towering pines. As you begin to near the lake, the terrain will become increasingly exposed, revealing sights of the looming peaks that line the path.
Eventually, you will graduate from the treeline and the stunning alpine lake will come into view. Enjoy the sights of the waters, which will mirror the encompassing mountains on a calm day. Notice Mount Mamma in the east and Chrysolite Mountain in the west. Enjoy the sweeping alpine panoramas, and when you are ready to return to the trailhead simply backtrack along the path.
