The Amasa Back and Cliffhanger Trail is a challenging hiking and biking route in Dead Horse Point State Park. This trail is dog-friendly but pups must be kept on a leash for the duration of their hike. There is lots to explore in this area as the Amasa Back Trail is part of a large and intricate trail network.
Getting there
From highway 191 in Moab, turn west onto Kane Creek Boulevard. Follow Kane Creek Boulevard for 5.3mi as it turns into Kane Springs Road. Look for the Amasa Back parking lot on the west side of the road. This is the parking area and starting point for the Amasa Back and Cliffhanger Trail.

Amasa Back and Cliffhanger Trail Description
The Amasa Back and Cliffhanger trail is a fun challenge for experienced hikers. When on this trail, keep in mind that you will be sharing this route with mountain bikers operating at high speeds, so be aware of your surroundings, stick to the side of the trail, and allow bikes to pass. Bring lots of water with you on this hike, there are few opportunities to rest in the shade, and there are no water sources along this route. You also might want to bring a camera along too as the views from this trail are absolutely stunning.
From the Amasa Back parking area, head down the road to the start of the trail on the north side of Kane Springs Road. Stay right at the trail divide and follow the path as it crosses over Kane Spring. At the first divide past the creek, stay right and then take a left at the divide immediately past here to start on Cliffhanger Trail. Follow Cliffhanger Trail for approximately 2.0mi before turning right onto the Amasa Back trail. Follow Amasa Back for another 2.0mi to a fantastic overlook.
You can do a little 0.3mi loop around the overlook before following the same route back to the trailhead. This trail is part of a large trail network, so there are lots of junctions and intersections along the route. Looking at a map, this trail may seem complicated but don’t worry—this area is well signed, well-maintained and well-populated, so it is tough to get lost.
