Lake Valhalla is an 11.4mi moderate trail that has something new to offer with every season: wildflowers in the early summer, berries in the late summer, autumn colors, and a winter wonderland once the snow falls. Note that the winter access to the lake is different.

This trail follows the Pacific Crest Trail for an alternate approach to the lake, but check out the traditional access to Lake Valhalla for a shorter outing.

Lake Valhalla via PCT Description

Lake Valhalla is a wonderful destination no matter the season. The lake itself is scenic and it has a nice sandy beach you can use for a picnic. Those wanting a longer hike into the lake will appreciate the hike on this section of the PCT, which provides access over 11.4mi. There are also camping sites around the lake as well, making it easy to stretch this adventure into a multi-day trip.

Begin from the trailhead, hiking just above the Stevens Creek valley floor. Chat up the thru-hikers you may encounter- they’re usually very happy to chat, especially if you have some snacks on hand.

You’ll skirt underneath three small mountains on a mostly level trail. Once around the third, hike through a brief flat basin before the steepest section begins, with a few wide switchbacks helping you up the hills that surround the lake.

Head down to Lake Valhalla. Take a seat on the beach, settling in to enjoy the scenery. If you’re camping, pick a site and set up, but remember that there are no fires allowed here.
When you’re ready, you’ll retrace your steps to the trailhead.
