Lake Easton Hike

Lake Easton State Park is conveniently located just off I-90, making it an easy stop for roadtrippers or wandering locals. The Lake Easton hike is an easy, moderately trafficked trail that hugs the shore of the lake, keeping you mostly in the shade on a well-maintained trail while providing side trails with lake access where possible. This simple hike takes you through a railway tunnel and across an impressive bridge. It’ll excite the kids and relax the whole family with its mostly flat grade.

This out and back trail can be made into a loop if you want a slightly longer adventure. Additionally, you can explore some of the other trails in the park, many of which are on the south and west sides of the lake.

Begin your hike from the trailhead, heading across the lake on the bridge. Pause to look down at the water below. As you get to the other side, take your first left. Stay straight until the trail splits shortly thereafter. Go right here, then stay straight as a handful of small trails connect to the main trail.

You’ll travel south with the lake on your left. There are various small trails that meet with yours, but you’ll continue on the current path until you reach the spit near the river. Go left here to cross over the water to the old railway line. You’ll hike alongside the Yakima River and the rail line, pausing to appreciate the tunnel as you pass through.

The GPS route ends once you’re past the river. You can keep going if you want- Easton is just ahead. This section of the route follows the Palouse to Cascades State Park Trail. Otherwise, you’ll turn around and retrace your steps back to the trailhead.

Monahan Mountain looms above the lake, and there are trails that lead up the mountain if you’d like to add a challenge to your day. Otherwise, head back to the park and set up your picnic, or hop in the car and continue on to wherever you’re headed next.
