Llanfrynach and Fan-y-Big Walk

Exploring the Brecon Beacons via the Llanfrynach and Fan-y-Big Walk is a challenging undertaking that will lead you through some rugged and tricky to navigate terrain. Be sure to wear proper walking boots, bring plenty of supplies like food and water, as well as a trail map and compass to better navigate the mountains.

This walking route may be a bit more on the rugged side; however, the stunning views from atop Fan-y-Big will more than make up for the trouble of traversing this long and tough trail. Although casual walkers can certainly attempt this walk, the route is geared more towards experienced adventurers looking to further explore the beauty of Brecon Beacons National Park.

Setting out from the trailhead, you will make your way to the southeast through the village of Llanfrynach and turn right along Tregaer Road, following it for 0.4mi before turning left. From here, you will continue along the lane to the southeast for 0.3mi and pick up the path on the right.

Follow along the path as it leads to the southwest through some light tree cover, taking you uphill for the next 2.8mi across the rugged lower slopes of Bryn to eventually arrive at a junction in the trail at the edge of the Gwaun Cerrig Llwydion Plateau. Take a few moments after making the lengthy climb uphill to catch your breath and enjoy the views of the surrounding mountains, before heading right along the trail towards the summit of Fan-y-Big.

After 0.5mi you will arrive at another junction and take the path on the left, keeping the edge of the hill on your right for the next 1.6mi to eventually arrive at the summit of Fan-y-Big. Here, you can explore the area and make your way out onto the diving board viewpoint for an amazing sightline across the Brecon Beacons, although you should exercise caution if doing so.

Once you have wrapped up your time at the summit, you will continue on to the northeast and follow the trail as it descends the mountainside while traversing the summit of Cefn Cyff. After reaching the bottom of the slope, you will pass through a series of gates and arrive at the edge of a lane, following it left for 0.2mi, before turning right onto another path. Here, you will pass through another gate and keep straight for the next 1.6mi, traversing the picturesque Welsh countryside on the return to the trailhead in Llanfrynach where you began your adventure along the Llanfrynach and Fan-y-Big Walk.

The peak is often climbed alongside the other Brecon Beacons of Corn Du, Pen-y-Fan, and Cribyn, and serves as a great terminus to the route with its diving board-shaped vantage point that offers picturesque views of the surrounding landscape.
