The Sawel Mountain Trail is a rugged walking excursion in the Sperrins Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that will take you up to a stunning viewpoint. While out walking the trail, you will climb up the steep slopes of the mountainside for some amazing views of the surrounding mountains, including Dart Mountain to the southwest and Meenard Mountain to the northeast. The terrain here can be very boggy after wet weather, so be sure to wear proper walking boots and gaiters if you have them.

Sawel Mountain Trail Description

If you are looking for a summit trail that won’t take you all day but will still provide a good challenge, then the Sawel Mountain Trail is worth a look. This out-and-back route will lead you directly up to the summit through some steep, rugged, and boggy terrain that will be sure to get your heartrate up.

Setting out from the trailhead, you will make your way to the west and immediately begin climbing up the steep slopes of Sawl Mountain. The initial portion of this route will likely be the most difficult, as the combination of steep terrain and boggy patches will slow you down some.

In terms of navigation, there aren’t any trail markers, so try to follow along the fence for the best route up to the summit. Once there, you will enjoy sweeping views across the undulating landscape of the Sperrins AONB. After taking in the views, simply retrace your steps along the same route to return to your vehicle.
