The Malmesbury River Walk is a 2.4mi circular walk that begins in the centre of Malmesbury and follows the River Avon through the countryside. This walk combines fascinating historical sites in this charming Cotswolds town with picturesque paths along the riverside. This trail will lead you by the Old Courthouse, St. Helen’s Church, and many other landmarks that highlight the ancient history of the town.
Getting there
To get to the beginning of the Malmesbury River Walk drive down Cross Hayes Lane and turn down Market Lane to access the Cross Hayes car park. Your trail starts at the Malmesbury Townhall across the street.

The Malmesbury River Walk is a lovely Cotswolds trail around the town and along the river Avon. Start your walk from the ancient Market Cross and the footbridge at Daniels well to explore the riverside fields. You’ll walk a circuit around Malmesbury as the path winds in and out of town.
As you walk the famous English countryside of the Cotswolds, you’ll discover pretty river views interspersed with historic landmarks. Stop and explore Malmesbury Abbey and Abbey House Gardens along the route. Don’t forget your rain boots as parts of the path can be muddy!
