The Devoke Water Circular Walk is an easy-going stroll through the barren yet beautiful moorland terrain of the western Lake District. While out on the trail, you will walk around the quiet edge of Devoke Water to take in scenic views of the rugged landscape. The easy-to-navigate paths are often boggy, but the route is easy enough to be enjoyed by walkers of every age and skill level.
Getting there
To reach the car park for the Devoke Water Circular Walk from Broughton-in-Furness, head west on C5051 for 0.3mi and turn right onto High Cross Brow/A595. After 0.6mi, turn right onto Smithy Lane and follow it for 3.0mi. Continue onto Sella Brow and after 0.7mi turn left. You will find the car park on the right in 3.4mi.

Devoke Water Circular Walk Description
The Devoke Water Circular Walk is a quick and easy walk that is suitable for all, but trail conditions in the area can sometimes prove to be a bit unfavourable. Due to the proximity of the trail to the water, walkways are often wet and boggy, requiring a decent pair of boots to combat the mud that you will surely encounter. Because of this, the trail is better left for the drier months of the year.
Even with the sometimes muddy conditions, this is still a fantastic family-friendly walk due to the short overall distance and beautiful scenery. Although the terrain is fairly barren, the open moorland and rugged hills stand in contrast to the dark hued water of the lake, making for a beautiful landscape that begs to be painted. If you find yourself in the southwest corner of the Lake District, try exploring the quiet rails around Devoke Water.
Setting out from the car park, head southwest along the wide track for 0.5mi, passing by Tewitt Moss on your left to arrive at a fork where a narrow path branches off to the right. Keep left along the track to begin the loop portion of the walk around Devoke Water. Here, you will have the craggy rock formation of Seat Howe on your left, and the calm expanse of the water on your right.
When you reach the point where the track starts to bend towards the water and boat house, take the footpath on the left and keep right through the junctions to continue along the edge of the water while enjoying views of Water Crag on the opposite shore. 0.85mi after turning off the track, you will arrive at a fork in the trail.
Head right to continue around the edge of the water for 1.0mi, as you traverse the foot of Water Crag and enjoy a different perspective of the lake with White Pike standing in the backdrop. When you reach the point where the trail meets up with the track, continue straight through to return to the car park, having completed the Devoke Water Circular Walk.
Insider Hints
The proximity of the trail to numerous streams and the lake itself often means that the trail is wet and boggy. Wear proper walking boots to stay comfortable on the trail.
If you want a better vantage point overlooking the lake, try climbing Seat Howe near the beginning of the walk for sweeping views across the landscape.
