Bowness Baker Park Trail Description

The Bowness Baker Park Loop connects two amazing parks in the city and has plenty of opportunities to play and explore the area. This spot may be busy, however there is plenty of green space to be shared. These are multi-use parks, so be prepared to encounter bikes, dogs, and other obstacles on your route. If you would like to have a picnic here, check the City of Calgary website to book a picnic site and ensure you will have a space to use.

Spending a half day on the Bowness Baker Park Loop trail is highly suggested. Bowness Park itself is a historic recreation location in Calgary. It has been used for almost a century by recreationalists. The park has excellent access to the Bow River for paddlers and swimmers alike. You can find boat rentals, picnic sites, a wading pool, teahouse, and even a train ride in this park. You won’t run out of things to do in this exciting and diverse park.

The trail starts in Baker Park on the north side of the river. Park in the main parking area east of the boat launch and find the paved path to begin your loop by hiking westbound. The trail starts along the water, south of the disc golf course. Walk towards the boat launch parking area, continuing along the water. At 1km, you will cross the AB-201 before joining it along the southbound path. Cross the Bow River and follow the trail on the left to enter Bowness Park. In 1148ft you will come to some public washrooms on the trail.

Stay on the trail to the right, south of the river, avoiding all the picnic sites. The picnic areas can be very busy, so if you are planning to enjoy lunch here, be sure to book in advance.

Follow the trail past some more washrooms and a large building that hosts the Seasons of Bowness Park restaurant. The trail will take you over water and across a small island to the east side of the park. Pass a playground and continue east towards 85 Street. Turn left and cross the 85 Street bridge back to Baker Park, staying left to reconnect with the parking lot.

These two parks make for a great way to spend a half or even full day (or as long as you like). You’ll feel like you have escaped the city when you come to these unforgettable green spaces.

Insider Hints

  • Book a picnic site in advance if you plan to show up on a weekend or busy holiday. You’ll want to secure a spot here.

  • Rent some kayaks at the Bowness Park boathouse for a fun family adventure along the Bow River.

  • Check out the train ride operated by the University of Calgary.
