Summer Travel Tips
When it comes to travelling there are countless tips and tricks that can help make your experience easier, so it can be a challenge to narrow them down to a single list. With that being said, we’ve tried to compile some of our favourite tips that relate specifically to travelling during the summer months. Without further adieu, here is our list of 10 tips to tackle summer travel. Hopefully you can put them to good use on your adventures!
1. Remember to Hydrate
On a regular day it can be a challenge to remember to drink enough water, so it’s easy to see how even the simplest of life’s necessities can be brushed aside when there are beautiful monuments to look at, interesting cultures to interact with, and delicious foods to be eaten! Make sure that you bring a water bottle along for your summer travels and fill it at every opportunity. You can thank us later!
2. Layer Up (or Down)
Layering up isn’t just for keeping warm in the winter months folks! Wearing several thin layers can help you adapt to changing weather conditions and temperatures, allowing you to stay comfortable on your chilly morning hike, relaxing lunch in the sunshine, and breezy evening meal on the terrace!
3. Smaller Towns, Slower Travel
If there is one thing that is worse than travelling in the sweltering heat of summer, it’s having to fight with large crowds and push through a thicket of sweaty people… not really the image you had of a fun summer vacation is it?
Trading the big city filled with over-crowded tourist attractions for a smaller town or village will not only get you away from the throngs of other tourists, but will offer a more authentic travel experience where you can really get a feel for your destination and its local inhabitants. Who knows, you might just stumble upon some unique customs or traditions you would have otherwise missed!
4. Go Solo
There is no denying that travelling during the summer months removes a number of logistical issues that can make solo travel a challenge, as the tourism infrastructure in most countries is fully up and running. With that in mind, why not take the time this summer to set out on your first solo adventure? It’s a truly liberating experience that everyone should try at least once!
5. Head South to Avoid the Heat
Most people will head south during the winter months in order to escape the cold, but if the heat really isn’t your thing, why not do the opposite? Travelling to countries in the Southern Hemisphere, such as Argentina, Chile, and Peru, offers an amazing way to explore the outdoors without the stifling heat of summer.
6. Try Alternative Accommodation
The nice thing about travelling during the summer months is that you aren’t hampered by the cold, wet, and windy conditions that are present during other times of the year. With this in mind, why not book some alternative accommodations that will make for a unique travel experience? House boats, campsites, cabins, and yurts are just a few of the fun ways you can change up the overnight stays on your trip.
7. Stay Grounded
Jet setting from destination to destination might be a faster way to travel, but is faster always better? Swap out the airport lines and stuffy flights for a scenic train ride or human-powered method of transportation to really embrace the atmosphere of summer and see as many sights as you can!
8. Stretch Your Legs
The beauty of summer is that unless it is raining, you can get out and explore the world to your heart’s content. So why not take advantage of that every chance you have? Ditch the taxi or public transit and try walking around on your next summer holiday. You’ll be surprised by how much better you will know your destination by the end of the trip!
9. Eat Al Fresco
Dining experiences go hand in hand with travel, so why not make the most out of the summer weather by eating outside? Whether you plan a romantic picnic outside of the city, set up for a fun barbecue on the beach, or post up on the terrace of a nice restaurant, eating al fresco is the perfect way to feast while on a summer adventure.
10. Check Your Passport!
Okay, Okay. This tip isn’t necessarily just related to summer travel, but the excitement of planning a summer adventure can easily distract you from keeping an eye on the more practical aspects of going on a trip. With that being said, make sure to check that your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date; no one wants to arrive at the airport only to find out they won’t be leaving the terminal!
